SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Alex Sifuentes scored her fourth goal of the season in the 37th minute and that's all the ninth-ranked Sonoma State women's soccer team would need to knock off host Cal State San Bernardino 1-0 on Thursday afternoon at Coyote Premier Field in San Bernardino.
The win extends the Seawolves' unbeaten streak to 13 and their shutout streak to nine, one shy of the program record of 10, set back in 1991. It was also
Ashley Luis' 13th shutout of the season, a new SSU single-season record.
Sonoma State, already the 2015 CCAA champions, enter the final match of regular season on Saturday at Cal Poly Pomona with an overall record of 12-1-3 and a CCAA mark of 9-0-2. Cal State San Bernardino fell to 4-10-3 (3-7-1 CCAA).
After taking a pass from
Sara Van Wagoner, Sifuentes dribbled right down the middle of the field and went 1v1 with Coyote goalkeeper Emily Whyte before burying it into the net from 15 yards out for the 1-0 Seawolf lead at 36:37. Sonoma had an 11-6 advantage in shots, and 6-1 on goal. Luis made one save on the day and it came in the 84th minute. Luis' goals against average now stands at 0.24, which remains the second-best in the nation behind West Virginia Wesleyan's Hillary Dewitt, who sports a 0.11 GAA with 16 shutouts, allowing just two goals in 18 of her team's games.
Sonoma State wraps up the regular season on Saturday at Cal Poly Pomona (11:30 am).
