SEASIDE, Calif. -- Andrew Ogilvy snapped a scoreless tie in the 44th minute and the Sonoma State men's soccer team held a 16-9 shot advantage in the match, but gave up the equalizer midway through the second half and was stunned with 10 seconds left in regulation when host Cal State Monterey Bay netted the go-ahead goal, suffering a 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon in Seaside.
The Seawolves fall to 5-3-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the CCAA as the Otters improve to 7-2 and 4-1 in conference action, moving to within three points of first place in the CCAA standings.
Ogilvy scored his first goal as a Seawolf and the third of his collegiate career at 43:11 when
Evan Filipczyk lofted a corner kick into the box and
TJ Perez headed the ball up to Ogilvy in the middle of the box, who fired it past Otter keeper Evan Drake for the 1-0 lead just before halftime. It capped a first half that SSU controlled, outshooting CSUMB 8-2 in the opening 45 minutes.
The Seawolves also outshot the Otters 8-7 in the second half, but Cal State Monterey Bay connected on two of its seven shots, one of which proved to be the dagger when Jorge Herrera headed in a corner kick from Adam Voloder at 89:50 for the 2-1 win. The other goal, the equalizer, came at 65:40.
"That was a tough loss," said head coach
Marcus Ziemer. "We played very well and created a lot of chances but didn't put (Cal State Monterey Bay) away. Credit to them, they hung in there and put a couple in against the run of play."
"Soccer is sometimes a stupid game," added Ziemer. "We dominated the majority of the game and had more chances, but they scored when it counted and this was the result."
"This one will be a tough one to bounce back from, but we will be ready for Notre dame de Namur on Wednesday."
Sonoma State returns home on Wednesday for a non-conference showdown with Notre Dame de Namur at 3:00 pm at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
