Callahan Carries Seawolves Past Urban Knights, 2-0

PACIFICA, Calif. -- Senior midfielder Sean Callahan accounted for both goals in a much-needed win for Sonoma State on Friday over the Academy of Art at Fairmont Field in Pacifica.  In the final non-conference game of the year for the Seawolves, they blanked the Urban Knights 2-0 to improve to 6-4-2 overall and bolster their hopes for a postseason appearance.  The Urban Knights fall to 5-3-1.

Knowing they needed a win after a pair of one-goal defeats, the Seawolves came out sharp.  While both sides created multiple chances in the early going, it was the Seawolves striking first with Callahan's first goal of the season.  Ryan Rohane slid a ball up the sideline to Brenton Frame, who's far post cross was met by the head of Callahan and re-directed into the net.

The Seawolves sat on their one-goal lead through the rest of the half, but shortly into the second, they'd get magic from Callahan once again.  This time it was a cross from Raad Aljabi from the right flank toward the center of the box, where Callahan's dome sent the ball between the pipes once again.

"Sean Callahan was the man of the match," said head coach Marcus Ziemer.  "His goals from his midfield position were really sharp."

Ziemer continued, "We put it together against a very good Academy of Art team today.  Our ball control was outstanding and we created quite a few chances."

While the Urban Knights were able to put six shots on goal, the sure-handed Mitch North was up to the task, recording six saves on his way to his fifth clean sheet of the season.  "Our defense was outstanding today," remarked Ziemer, "Jose Avalos, in particular, was a beast defensively in the midfield."

The final box shows a 17-12 shot advantage for the Seawolves, but a 6-5 lead in shots on goal for the Urban Knights.

After playing four games in a span of seven days, the Seawolves will now have a week off before hosting Cal State San Marcos on Friday.
