ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State men's soccer team held a 20-13 shot advantage in the match, including 11-7 in the second half, but gave up a goal midway through the second half and couldn't recover despite several chances late in Wednesday's 1-0 loss to visiting Notre Dame de Namur in non-conference action at the Seawolf Soccer Field in Rohnert Park.
The Seawolves dropped to 5-4-2 overall and the Argonauts of the Pacific West Conference rose to 4-5-0.
"That was a disappointing loss," said head coach
Marcus Ziemer. "Both teams looked tired, but NDNU found a way to get it done."
After a scoreless first half, Notre Dame de Namur brought some pressure deep in Sonoma State and connected on a shot by Hunter Le Blanc at 62:09 that beat Seawolf goalkeeper
Mitch North to the right side of the net. From then on, the Seawolves would outshoot the Argonauts 11-3, many of the 11 just missing nylon.
Andrew Ogilvy found himself with the ball just five yards out, surrounded by eight NDNU defenders, but his attempt in the 82nd minute would be cleared off the line by the Argos just before it went in. Then, three minutes later,
TJ Perez went streaking down the left side, sprinting past defenders before launching a 30 yard rocket that banged off the crossbar. Running down the field with Perez,
Eric Alvarado was at the goalmouth to head in the ball off the crossbar, but his attempt sailed high and the score remained 1-0 in favor of Notre Dame de Namur. The Seawolves would get two more shots in late, but to no avail.
North made four saves for Sonoma State and his counterpart, Alex Clewis, made three. Ogilvy led the SSU attack, firing five shots, two of which were on goal.
"All of us, the players and the coaches, need to take a look at ourselves and figure out what we can contribute to the team going forward," added Ziemer.
Sonoma State will play at Academy of Art on Friday in Pacifica at 1:00 pm before coming back home for its final four home games of the regular season, starting with a match next Friday (Oct. 16) against CCAA-newcomer Cal State San Marcos.
