Seawolves Dial Long Distance In 77-56 Win Over Art U

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Sonoma State men's basketball team used an impressive second half performance to exact some revenge on the Academy of Art on Saturday, closing out the 15th Annual Ron Logsdon Classic with a 77-56 win at The Wolves' Den.  Just one week after a loss to the Urban Knights in San Rafael, the Seawolves pumped in 14 three-pointers on their way to the decisive 21-point victory.  Tournament MVP James Davis led the way with 19 points on the back of five three-pointers as the Seawolves see their record jump to 4-1.

While neither team grabbed control of the game in the early going, it was the Academy of Art building the first substantial lead.  After an Uchenna Okeneme three-pointer with 4:05 left, the Urban Knights had worked up the largest lead either team would enjoy in the first half at 32-24.  Their advantage would be short-lived, however, as the Seawolves reeled off nine in a row and finished the half on a 13-2 run to enter the break with a 37-34 advantage.

After a Marshawn McMahan three-pointer narrowed the gap to 47-43 in the second half, the Seawolves went on another run, scoring the next ten points to give them a cushion they would ride until the final horn.  In fact, the Seawolves would use the long ball to outscore the Urban Knights 21-4 over a seven-minute span in the second half.

The 14 three-pointers made by Sonoma State were two off the school-record of 16 and the most since they drained 15 against Cal State San Bernardino in 2012.  In addition to Davis' five, David Ahern had three, Andy Mitchell had two, and a quartet of Seawolves drained one apiece.

Davis finished the night with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting.  All-Tournament selection Andy Mitchell was the Seawolves' second-highest scorer with 15 to go along with four rebounds and two steals.  Ahern, also an All-Tournament pick, had 12 points and Nathan Molony-Benjamin posted 11 points, five rebounds, and a pair of blocked shots.    Michael Avery and James Slade led Sonoma's rebounding efforts with seven and six, respectively.

The Academy of Art had 11 three-pointers themselves, with Nick Cary and Chris Salas recording four each.  They were also the team's high scorers with 12 apiece.

Sonoma State outshot Art U 50.9% to 43.1%.  They also had a decisive advantage in free throw shooting (9-for-17 against 1-for-3).

It's the second consecutive season that the Seawolves have opened up with a 4-1 record.
