Seawolves Fall Short On Friday Night Against Humboldt

ARCATA, Calif. -- Despite the offensive efforts of David Ahern, who scored a season-high 17 points and the rest of the Sonoma State men's basketball team, the Seawolves dropped their third consecutive conference game, a 77-62 setback to Humboldt State at the Lumberjack Arena in Arcata Friday night.

The Seawolves now stand 0-3 against CCAA opponents and 5-4 overall. The Lumberjacks' record, on the other hand, boosted to 2-1 in conference and 5-1 in all.

A three-point shot by James Slade that came less than a minute into first half gave Sonoma State the early lead.  Humboldt, however, was able to pull away, leading by 16 with less than eight minutes to go in the first half. Yet, the Seawolves put up an offensive rally of their own and by the time the buzzer blew for the half, the score was 39-33 with the deficit being just six.

The Lumberjacks scored 11 unanswered points starting off the second half and would hold a 19-point lead, their biggest of the night, with just 1:28 to go in the game. The Seawolves managed to drain three more shots with time remaining but the deficit was too great to overcome.
Ahern led the Seawolves with 17 points and six total shots—three of which came from behind the 3-point line. Nathan Molony-Benjamin was responsible for six of his team's 33 rebounds. Luke Cochran also added 11 points to the board with five rebounds.

Although the 'Jacks had 18 personal fouls on the night, the Seawolves made just four of their 12 free throws—that 33.3 percent being the lowest of the season. The 'Jacks were nearly perfect in that regard, making 9 of 10 from the foul line. Humboldt also made 50.9 percent of the total shots, compared to the Seawolves' 43.1.

Tyras Rattler and Rakim Brown led Humboldt State with 19 and 18 points, respectively. Brown's eight rebounds led his team as well.

The Seawolves will look to earn their first CCAA victory next Saturday night in the Wolves' Den where they will host rival Chico State with tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
