Davis Shoots Sonoma Past #17 Wildcats In Upset Victory

ROHNERT PARK -- James Davis, with 33 points on the night, scored over 54 percent of his team's total points, which was just the performance the Sonoma State men's basketball team needed to defeat rival and 17th-ranked Chico State in a 61-58 upset Saturday night in Rohnert Park.

Not only did the Seawolves snap their three-game losing streak and grab their first CCAA win, they also put an end to the Wildcats' six-game winning streak. Sonoma rises to 1-3 in conference play and 6-4 on the season while Chico drops to 3-1 in the CCAA and 9-2 overall.

Although the first basket of the night went to the 'Cats, David Ahern got on his team on the board with a 3-pointer, the first of 17 total lead changes on the night.  By the time the half was over, the teams were tied at 16. Chico had suffered 13 turnovers compared to Sonoma's four. The Seawolves and Wildcats made 20.7 percent and 31.8 percent of their shots, respectively, during those first 20 minutes.

But the second half was a different story for both teams. Each team had already doubled their score by the 11-minute mark. The Seawolves made nine of 12 three-pointers in the second. Davis was responsible for six of them.

With 9:30 left on the clock, the final lead change for the Seawolves occurred with a shot from behind the arc off the hands of Michael Avery. They possessed a 7-point lead, tying their largest of the night, with eight seconds to go.

Chico drained two 3-pointers in those last seconds, including one from half court that beat the final buzzer, but the Seawolf lead was too large and the home team then celebrated their first CCAA victory.

The 'Cats snatched a season-high 44 rebounds, but Seawolves had a season-high 12 steals.

Davis drained seven of his 13 shots from downtown and Andy Mitchell was a perfect two for two from that distance. Mitchell ended the night with 10 points and four rebounds.

Chico State's Robert Duncan led his team with 27 points and 12 rebounds.

Sonoma State is scheduled to play New Years' Day against Cal State Monterey Bay at the Otter Sports Center in Seaside. Tip-off is at 4 pm. The Seawolves will then return home on Jan. 8 to take on Cal State San Bernardino at 7:30 pm in The Wolves' Den.
