Late Run Propels Sonoma To Convincing Win Over Otters

SEASIDE, Calif. -- With the help from James Davis' 17 points and James Slade's eight rebounds, the Sonoma State men's basketball team grabbed its first win of the New Year with a 72-57 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay Friday afternoon at The Kelp Bed in Seaside.

After starting the season off 0-3 against CCAA opponents, the Seawolves have now earned their second-straight conference win, boosting their record to 2-3 and 6-4 overall. The Otters' record falls to 1-3 in the CCAA and 3-7 on the season.

Cal State Monterey Bay took an early lead within the first five minutes of the half, but a shot from behind the arc off the hands of Andy Mitchell gave SSU the lead at the 13-minute mark. From that point on, the Seawolves would never relinquish their lead. The score was 33-26 by the end of the half.

The deficit would only become even greater in the second half. Less than ten minutes in, a 3-point shot from Jimmy Golden put Sonoma ahead by 12. Golden ended the game with 11 points, which tied a career-high.

The deficit was 15 by the time the final buzzer sounded and the Seawolves celebrated their victory on the Otters' home court.

David Ahern contributed 12 points and was nearly perfect from the foul line, making five of his six attempts, all of which came within the last two minutes of the game.

The Seawolves made 47.1 percent on their shots and was 7-15 from downtown. The Otters' 37.5 field goal percentage and 57 total points were the lowest of their season.

CSUMB's Evan Zeller scored the highest amount of points for both teams with 18.

Friday night, the Seawolves will look to keep their hot streak alive as they take on the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino at The Wolves' Den with a 7:30 tipoff.
