ROHNERT PARK -- It was Senior Night at The Wolves' Den as the Seawolf faithful celebrated the Sonoma State careers of
Brandon Glanz,
JJ Mina,
Zen Maki, and
Mike Harris. Unfortunately, the four players and the rest of the Seawolves couldn't make the last home game a winning one. Cal State Stanislaus held off the Seawolves in the second half to take home a 68-62 victory. The Seawolves drop to 8-12 in CCAA play and 11-13 overall. The Warriors (15-10 overall) improved to 12-8 in conference play clinched the sixth and final spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament. With the loss, the Seawolves are eliminated from contention for a berth in the CCAA Tournament.
The Seawolves fell behind 18-4 with 12:14 left in the opening half, but were able to chisel away at half the deficit and went to the half down 34-25. The excitement picked up for the Noma Nation when the Seawolves were able to cut the Warriors lead to three points at three separate times in the second half, but were never able to force a tie and saw the Warriors rebuild their advantage to 60-48 before hearing the final horn sound on a six-point victory.
The field goal percentages for both squads were close like the final score of the game. The Warriors hit on 43.5% (20-46) while the Seawolves hit on 42.5% (17-40). The rebounding category was almost dead-even as the Warriors grabbed one more board than the Seawolves (28-27). A big factor in the Warrior win was the points off turnovers category. The Warriors won that battle by converting 15 Seawolf turnovers into 15 points, while Sonoma State could only convert 11 Cal State Stanislaus turnovers into three points.
Individually, Mina had a great Senior Night as he led the Seawolves in scoring with 20 points, including two three-pointers and a perfect 6 for 6 from the charity-stripe. It was the seventh time this year Mina has led his team in points scored for a game. Maki also had a good senior night scoring 10 points.
Nathan Molony-Benjamin had a team-high nine rebounds. Molony-Benjamin also had three of the six steals by Sonoma State.
The Warriors were led by Chris Read's 23 points.
Sonoma State closes out their 2014-15 campaign with two road games against Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. The first one is Friday night against Dominguez Hills at 7:30 PM.
