ROHNERT PARK -- After falling in the opener 6-1, the Sonoma State softball team rebounded for a 5-1 victory in the nightcap to salvage the doubleheader split with visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday at the Seawolf Softball Field in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves rise to 9-3 this season and wrap up their first CCAA series of the season with a 3-1 mark. The Toros fell to 3-8 overall (1-3 CCAA).
Game 1: CSU Dominguez Hills 6, Sonoma State 1In the opener, the Seawolves jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout by
Keeley Ray just two batters into the bottom of the first inning, but that would be all SSU would conjure up offensively against Toro pitcher Jamie Duran the rest of the way.
Cal State Dominguez Hills would take the lead it wouldn't relinquish in the third inning on a two-run home run that sailed up and over the right field foul pole for the visitors' 2-1 lead. In the fifth, Stephanie Hua cleared the bases with a three-run double, then Jasmine Ruiz added to the lead with an RBI single of her own to put the Toros up 6-1, the eventual final score.
Sonoma managed five hits off of Duran (2-3), two of which came off the bat of
Amanda Rossetta. Duran's counterpart, SSU's
Amanda Llerena (5-2), was tagged with the loss as she allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks. She also struck out seven.
Game 2: Sonoma State 5, CSU Dominguez Hills 1The tables would turn in the series finale, thanks to a masterful pitching effort by
Mayleen Mazon for the second straight day. Mazon (2-1) allowed just one unearned run on four hits and five walks, striking out two. The only CSUDH run that came across the plate was a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
Meanwhile, the Seawolf offense again put up a run in the bottom of the first inning, this time on an
Alison Strycula RBI single to score Holly Brown. Three more runs came home in the SSU fourth thanks to an RBI single by Purdy, a bases-loaded walk by Ray and a sacrifice fly by Brown. Rossetta later added a run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single scoring Purdy for the 5-1 lead and victory.
Purdy, Rossetta and
Karly Macadangdang led the way offensively with two hits each off of CSUDH pitcher Alyssa Valinches (1-4).
Sonoma State will step out of conference play on Wednesday to host Academy of Art in a doubleheader at 1:00 pm before returning to CCAA action next weekend by hosting Cal State San Bernardino in a four-game series next Friday and Saturday in Rohnert Park.
