ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of visiting Academy of Art with 4-1 and 7-5 victories in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at the Seawolf Softball Field in Rohnert Park.
Ancia Purdy led the way offensively with four hits, two RBI and two runs scored in the doubleheader while
Alison Strycula went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI in game two, lifting the Seawolves to 11-3 this season. The Urban Knights fell to 8-5.
Game 1: Sonoma State 4, Academy of Art 1Amanda Llerena got back on track in game one, allowing one run on five hits with six strikeouts to keep the Academy of Art offense off balance all afternoon. The only AAU run came across the plate in the sixth inning on RBI single from Elise Oldham. With the effort, she improved to 6-2 in the circle this season.
The Sonoma State offense got things going in the second inning, scoring three runs by way of an error and a two RBI single by Purdy. Two innings later,
Taylor Batey launched her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field to put SSU up 4-0.
Purdy had two of the Seawolves' seven hits in the opener.
Aubrie Tolliver had a double and a run scored.
Game 2: Sonoma State 7, Academy of Art 5In the nightcap, the two teams combined for 12 runs on 24 hits, and while the Urban Knights outhit the Seawolves 13-11, Sonoma State took home the 7-5 win.
SSU plated three runs in the first and three more in the second to lead 6-2 after two complete innings. In the first inning,
Amanda Rossetta had an RBI single, Strycula had an RBI triple and Batey added an RBI single, all of which were unearned due to a defensive error by AAU that prolonged the inning.
Academy of Art responded with two runs of their own in the top of the second before a two-RBI double by
Holli Brown and an RBI single by Strycula put Sonoma State up by four runs at 6-2.
The Urban Knights added a run in the third, then the bats quieted down until the bottom of the sixth when
Keeley Ray brought home Purdy for the 7-3 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Academy of Art made things interesting with four consecutive hits to lead off the inning against SSU's
Gabby Dupree, who took over for starter
Mayleen Mazon at the top of the frame. However, with the bases loaded, already a run in and no outs, Dupree settled down and induced two groundouts (one of which allowed an AAU run) and a pop up to end the game and secure the sweep for Sonoma State.
Mazon (3-1) worked the first six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits and two walks with one strikeout before giving way to Dupree in the seventh. Offensively, Strycula led the way as both Purdy and Ray also had two hits apiece.
Academy of Art starter Alexa Peters (2-3) was tagged with the loss, going just two-thirds of an inning and allowing three hits and three unearned runs. Kamyle Glover took over and went the rest of the way, scattering eight hits and allowing four runs (one earned), due in part by five defensive errors by the Urban Knights in the contest.
Sonoma State will return to CCAA action on Friday when it hosts Cal State San Bernardino for a four-game series on Friday and Saturday at the Seawolf Softball Field. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for Noon.
