CHICO, Calif. -- The Sonoma State baseball team had a one-run lead going into the bottom of the ninth, but saw 16th-ranked Chico State push across two runs to take the series opener, 3-2 on Thursday night at Nettleton Stadium in Chico. The Seawolves drop to 0-5 in CCAA play and 3-8 overall. The Wildcats improve to 4-0 in the conference and 5-2 overall.
The Seawolves got the scoring started in the fourth inning when
Adam Manzer hit his first career homer to left field to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead. The Seawolves got their second run on an infield single to the shortstop by
Philip Ramos plating
Eric Ehlow from third base.
Bobby Raymos turned in a great start for Sonoma State, pitching 6 1/3 innings and allowing only one earned run on four hits and five strikeouts. Raymos' ERA actually rose to a minuscule 1.20 on the early season.
DeVon Golden came in relief of Raymos and held the Wildcats scoreless through 1 2/3 innings on three hits.
Tyler Sanders took the loss for Sonoma State (1-1), while AJ Epstein (1-0) got the win for the Wildcats.
Jourdan Weiks got three hits in four at bats to lead Sonoma State. Manzer also had a single to go with the homerun he hit in the fourth inning to give him two hits on the night. Andrew Carrillo led the way for Chico State with three hits in five at bats with an RBI.
The second and third games of the four-game series are scheduled for Friday. The first pitch for game one of the doubleheader is 11:00 A.M.
