Seawolves Win Rain-Shortened Opener; Series Finale Cancelled

ROHNERT PARK -- Just after the Sonoma State softball team scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning of game two to take a 5-0 lead over visiting Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, the clouds suddenly moved in, drenched the field and offered a pretty spectactular lightning show, effectively ending game one in favor of SSU and it was determined later that the series finale would be cancelled due to unplayable field conditions.

With the rain-shortened victory, the Seawolves improve to 14-3 and 6-1 in the CCAA as winners of 13 of their last 14 games.  The Coyotes fell to 9-11 (1-6 CCAA).

Reminiscent of Friday's opener, SSU's Amanda Llerena and CSUSB's Cassandra Williams entered another pitcher's duel for the first couple of innings.  However, Sonoma State was able to break through for a run in the bottom of the third when Leanna Georges singled home Alison Strycula for the 1-0 lead.  Williams only allowed three Seawolf hits until the fifth when Ancia Purdy, Keeley Ray and Holli Brown recorded back-to-back-to-back triples, followed by a single by Taylor Batey to put Sonoma up 5-0, chasing Williams from the game.  Jamie Nelson came on in relief to induce the final out of the inning.

In the top of the sixth inning as the rain began to fall, Llerena began to lose control of the ball, hitting Ashley Leffingwell and walking Alyssa Ramos to put Coyote runners on first and second with one out.  However, the rain started to come down in buckets and both teams agreed to call the game and the series.

Llerena improved to 8-2 this season, allowing just one hit of shutout ball, walking one and striking out four after her no-hitter one day prior.  Offensively, Ray led the way with two hits, including the aforementioned RBI triple in the fifth.  The Seawolves got seven hits off of Williams (7-6), who walked one and struckout seven for the Coyotes.

The fourth and final game of the series will not be rescheduled.

Sonoma State will head south next weekend to face UC San Diego on Friday and Saturday.
