HAYWARD, Calif. -- A promising start for the Sonoma State women's basketball team turned into disappointment as the Seawolves were outscored 37-23 in the second half and lost 60-53 Friday night at Pioneer Gym in Hayward. The Seawolves fell to 4-11 in CCAA play and 6-13 overall with their ninth straight loss. The Pioneers improved to 8-7 in conference play and 13-8 overall.
The Seawolves came out ready to play in a game that featured six ties and 12 lead changes. The Seawolves shot 48% from the field in the first half and saw themselves score the final five points of the half and extend a 25-23 lead to 30-23 halftime lead on an
Emilee Osagiede three-pointer and
Madison Burroughs jumper.
The positive finish to the first half couldn't be extended to the beginning of the second half as the Pioneers scored the first 10 points of the second half to give the Pioneers a 33-30 lead before Osagiede hit another three-pointer to give the Seawolves their first points of the half. The Seawolves were up 44-42 with 11:03 remaining when the Pioneers went on a 10-0 run to take an eight point lead that sank the Seawolves.
Sonoma shot 40.8% (20-49) from the field compared with 37.5% (21-56) for Cal State East Bay. A telling statistic was that the Pioneers went to the free-throw line 18 times and made 12 (66.7%) compared with only five makes in 10 attempts for the Seawolves. The extra seven made free-throws equals the seven point margin of victory for the Pioneers. The Pioneers out rebounded the Seawolves 46-21. The Seawolves outscored the Pioneers 22-13 in points off turnovers.
Taylor Acosta led all Sonoma State scorers with 12 points.
Hannah Sourek and Osagiede each had eight points. Burroughs led the Seawolves with six rebounds and also contributed seven points.
Tori Breshers led Cal State East Bay in points with 14 and rebounds with nine. Micah Walker had 11 points and eight rebounds.
Sonoma State concludes their weekend pair of games at Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday night. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 P.M.
