Second Half Rally Falls Short In Two-Point Loss At CSUMB

SEASIDE, Calif. -- Madison Burroughs drained a three-pointer with 1:05 left in the game to knot it at 52-all, capping a 24-14 run by the Sonoma State women's basketball team over the previous 12 minutes, but Cal State Monterey Bay's Nikki Beckman hit a go-ahead jumper with five seconds left and it would eventually hold up to be the game-winner as the Seawolves dropped a 54-52 decision to the Otters on Saturday night at the Kelp Bed in Seaside.

Sonoma has lost 10 consecutive games, falling to 6-14 overall and 4-12 in the CCAA.  CSU Monterey Bay improves to 6-15 (4-12 CCAA).

The Seawolves trailed for all but 38 minutes of the contest, tying the game just once, and it would come after they saw their largest deficit of the night.  CSUMB's Jenna Bandy hit a three-pointer with 13:42 left to give the hosts a 38-28 lead, but Hannah Sourek single-handedly cut the Otter lead in half with two layups and a free throw to make the score 38-33 with just under 12 minutes to go.  Sonoma State would steadily chip away from then on, only to score its first tie of the night on Burroughs' three-ball.

Burroughs would steal the ball back 13 seconds later, attempt the potential go-ahead shot 22 seconds after that, but on the miss, SSU was called for a foul on the rebound, sending the ball back the other way.  That's when Beckman hit her go-ahead shot for CSUMB.  The Seawolves took possession of the ball with five seconds remaining and Taylor Acosta got fouled with one second on the clock, putting her on the free throw line.  However, she would miss both attempts and the clock expired soon thereafter, signaling the CSU Monterey Bay victory.

Sourek led all players with 16 points and eight rebounds.  Emilee Osagiede chipped in with 12 points off the bench.  Burroughs had eight points to go along with matching Sourek with eight boards.

Sonoma State will play four of its final six regular season games at home starting Friday against Cal Poly Pomona at 5:30 pm.
