#24 Seawolves Squeak Out 1-0 Win In Opener Before Losing 7-1

ROHNERT PARK -- Two-time reigning CCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week Amanda Llerena again proved to be dominant in the pitching circle in game one, earning a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts in a 1-0 victory in game one, but the 24th-ranked Sonoma State softball team struggled in game two, dropping a 7-1 decision to visiting Cal State East Bay, splitting Friday's doubleheader at the Seawolf Softball Field in Rohnert Park.

The Seawolves move to 18-5 overall and falling into second place in the CCAA standings at 10-3, one-half game behind Cal State Monterey Bay.  The Pioneers are now 15-11 (8-10 CCAA).

GAME 1:  #24 Sonoma State 1, Cal State East Bay 0

Llerena continued to stymie opposing hitters in the series-opener on Friday, allowing just two hits in her complete-game effort.  In fact, the junior from San Jose didn't allow a hit until there was one out in the top of the sixth inning.

With Llerena dealing in the circle, all the Seawolves needed was one run, and it came in the bottom of the third inning on an Ashley Long single up the middle that scored Ancia Purdy from second base for the only run of the game.

Cal State East Bay's Sierra Clark (7-4) allowed seven Sonoma State hits in her tough-luck loss.  Llerena (11-3) dropped her season ERA to 1.74, the second-best in the conference.  Keeley Ray accounted for two of SSU's seven hits.

GAME 2:  Cal State East Bay 7, #24 Sonoma State 1

It was a much different story in game two as the visiting Pioneers exploded for seven runs on 12 hits off of three different Seawolf pitchers, plating three of the runs in the top of the first inning against game two starter Mayleen Mazon to set the tone.  CSU East Bay scored a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth, chasing Mazon from the game with Sonoma down 6-0.  Gabby Dupree replaced Mazon with one out in the sixth and retired both batters she faced to stop the bleeding.  Carlie Daniel worked the final inning for SSU, but the Pioneers were able to get one more run across in the seventh to take a 7-0 lead.

Down by seven, Purdy reached on a leadoff single then stole two bases before Ray knocked her home on an RBI groundout.  However, it would be the only run the Seawolves could muster despite leaving nine runners on base, including the bases loaded twice.

Mazon (5-2) suffered the loss, giving up six runs on 10 hits and three walks, striking out two.  Her counterpart, Tatiana Beilstein (5-4), allowed five hits and four walks, striking out one in her complete-game-winning effort.  Purdy had two of the five SSU hits in the nightcap.

Sonoma State and Cal State East Bay will wrap up its four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
