ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Sonoma State came into their Sunday morning contest hoping to clinch a series win against #8 Cal Poly Pomona. The Seawolves, however, came up short in their bid, settling for a split of the four-game series at Seawolf Diamond after a 4-0 loss. The defeat drops the Seawolves to 7-9 in CCAA play and 12-12 overall. The Broncos are now 8-4 in the conference and 16-6 overall.
The Seawolves were silenced on Sunday by the pitching of Cal Poly Pomona's Ryan Olson and an excellent defense. In fact,
Eric Ehlow and
Alex Crosby were both robbed of home runs in the fourth and ninth inning, respectively. The Seawolves collected five hits on the day and had a threat going in the ninth inning when Ehlow and
Steven Nagy got back-to-back singles with one out. With Ehlow and Nagy on first and second,
Dustyn Macaluso hit into a fielder's choice as Ehlow was forced out at third base for out number two. The final out of the ninth was recorded when
Philip Ramos hit a groundball to second.
Daniel Caresio, Crosby, Ehlow, Ramos, and Nagy all had one hit for the Seawolves. Nagy took over right field in the third inning for
Adam Manzer, when Manzer suffered an injury.
Aaron Gillis took the loss (0-2) after going 2 2/3 innings and allowing three earned runs on three hits and three strikeouts.
Devin Bradley and
Devin Alexander came out of the bullpen and kept the Seawolves in the game by allowing only an earned run on five hits with five strikeouts the rest of the way.
Olson improved his record to 3-0 for the Broncos after going 6 2/3 innings and allowing no earned runs on a hit with six strikeouts. Christian Kelly went 3 for 5 with a run for Cal Poly Pomona.
Sonoma State returns to the field on Tuesday at Seawolf Diamond at 2:00 P.M. against the Academy of Art.
