ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- With the score tied and one out in the eighth inning,
Brandon Baranzini stepped to the plate and smacked a triple to right field, setting the stage for a come-from-behind non-conference win for Sonoma State over the Academy of Art on Tuesday in non-conference baseball action. The next batter,
Spencer Neve, sealed the deal with a sacrifice fly to deep left field, giving Sonoma a 3-2 lead that they would not relinquish. The win moves the Seawolves to 13-12 on the season while the Urban Knights fall to 5-16.
It was a game where the Seawolves had to battle back from an early 2-0 deficit. The Seawolves were able to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Steven Moen got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring
Rayson Romero from third. The Seawolves were able to draw even in the bottom of the sixth after
Devin Alexander doubled down the left field line to score
Cody Morris.
Morris was the only Seawolf to record more than one hit in the game as he went 2-for-4.
Sonoma State gave a whole new meaning to pitching-by-committee, with nine pitchers each throwing one inning. Seven of the eight pitchers didn't allow a single hit in their innings.
Taylor Toccalino picked up the win (1-0) for Sonoma State after pitching a perfect eighth inning. In all, Seawolf pitchers allowed just two hits over their nine innings of work.
Jacob Green took the loss (0-2) for the Urban Knights after pitching four innings and giving up two earned runs on four hits. Daniel Skinner went 1 for 2 with two RBI's.
Sonoma State's next home contest is Friday at 11:00 A.M. when Cal State Stanislaus visits for a doubleheader. The second game will begin 25-30 after the completion of the first game.
