ROHNERT PARK, Calif.—Down 4-0 with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and two outs, the reigning CCAA Player of The Week,
Alex Crosby, stepped to the plate and delivered a bases-clearing double down the left-field line that put the tying run on second base. Unfortunately, the next batter,
Devin Alexander, was retired on a bang-bang play at first base and the Seawolves lost the opener of their weekend series against UC San Diego 4-3 Friday at Seawolf Diamond. The Seawolves record falls to 10-11 in CCAA play and 16-14 overall. The Tritons improve to 16-4 in the conference and 20-8 overall.
The game was expected to be a pitcher's duel between the Seawolves
Bobby Raymos and the Tritons Justin Donatella and the two starters didn't fail to deliver. The game featured only three hits through the first five innings and didn't see the first run scored until the seventh inning by UC San Diego. The Tritons were able to add three runs more runs in the eighth inning to take what appeared to be a safe 4-0, but the Seawolves were determined to make the Tritons sweat. Singles by
Spencer Neve and pinch-hitting
Dustyn Macaluso, followed by a
Jourdan Weiks fielder's choice loaced the bases, before Crosby flared a double down the left field line to plate three.
Including his three-run double, Crosby stayed hot, going 2-for-5 on the day.
Cody Morris was a perfect 3-for-3.
Raymos was impressive once again, but saw his record drop to 4-2. The senior went seven innings and only allowed one earned run on four hits and eight strikeouts.
Donatella got the win (6-1) for the Tritons after pitching six innings and allowing three hits on 11 strikeouts. Zach Friedman was 1 for 3 with a big three-run home run.
The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader that begins at 11:00 A.M. Game 2 will start about 25-30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
