ROHNERT PARK -- Amanda Llerena and
Mayleen Mazon combined to allow just seven hits and one unearned run to go with 13 strikeouts in 14 innings as the Sonoma State softball team earned a pair of victories (4-1 and 1-0) over visiting Chico State on Friday afternoon at the Seawolf Softball Field.
The Seawolves (30-13) remain in third place in the CCAA standings with a 17-8 record as the Wildcats (21-15) fell into a tie for fifth place in the conference with a 14-12 mark with Cal State Dominguez Hills, one-half game behind fourth-place Cal State San Bernardino.
In the opener, Sonoma State got three runs right off the bat -- pun intended -- on a two-RBI single by
Amanda Rossetta and a Chico State error later in the bottom of the first that allowed
Carlie Daniel to score for the 3-0 lead.
Olivia Lucchese gave the Seawolves a 4-0 lead with an RBI single in the fourth, scoring
Ashley Long.
That would be all Llerena (18-9) would need to earn the victory. A Wildcat run came home to score in the sixth inning, but on a Seawolf error, therefore it became an unearned run. She allowed five hits and one walk, striking out nine. Lucchese and
Ancia Purdy had two hits in the opener to lead SSU offensively.
In the nightcap, Mazon (8-4) was untouchable as she gave up just two hits and struck out four to earn the complete-game shutout win. The Seawolves scored in the second when
Keeley Ray singled to center field, scoring
Holli Brown, and it would be the only run scored in the game by either team. Ray's hit in the second extended her hit streak to 23 games and her reached base streak to 43. Sonoma managed just three hits off of Brooke Langeloh (10-7), but it would be enough for the win.
Sonoma State and Chico State will wrap up the four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at Noon.
