Ray Extends Record-Breaking Streak In Wednesday's Split

ROHNERT PARK -- Keeley Ray extended her CCAA record-breaking streak of most consecutive games reaching base to 47 games and stretched her hitting streak to 27 with a pair of hits in each game, but the Sonoma State softball team was forced to split a mid-week non-conference doubleheader with Dominican on Wednesday at the Seawolf Softball Field in Rohnert Park.

The first game was a continuation of a suspended game from Feb. 4 when it was called due to darkness with the Seawolves leading 3-1 after four complete innings of play and it was the hosts to hang on to the lead and claim a 4-1 victory that ended a 1,678-hour long game.  Sonoma State (32-15) then unleashed a furious rally in its final at bat in game two, but a five-run deficit was too much to overcome as Dominican (12-25) held on for the split with a 7-5 win in the nightcap.

It was announced earlier in the day that Sonoma State is ranked at No. 4 in the first official NCAA Division II West Region Poll.  The regional poll will continue to be released each Wednesday until May 4 at 7:00 am Pacific Time when the 2015 NCAA Division II Softball Tournament field is announced via a live selection show on NCAA.com.  The Top 8 teams in the final poll will qualify for the NCAA tournament and the Seawolves are looking to appear in their seventh straight NCAA postseason event.

Leading 3-1 to begin the day, Sonoma State got a run off of a Mayleen Mazon single in the sixth inning that scored Holli Brown for the 4-1 lead and eventual game-winning score.  Mazon improved to 10-4 in the circle, allowing two hits and one unearned run.

In game two, Dominican continued to pile on runs throughout the contest, taking a 7-2 lead into the seventh inning.  In their last at bat, the Seawolves put three runners on base with no outs and Jordann White delivered a bases-clearing single to put the hosts within two runs at 7-5, but with one out due to White being thrown out at second base trying to advance on a throw home during the play.  After a strikeout to put two outs on the board, Mazon and Aubrie Tolliver recorded back-to-back singles before both advanced a base on a fielding error by the Dominican center fielder on Tolliver's single.  Brown stepped to the plate and fouled off the first two pitches she saw down the left field line and over the outfield fence, but the Penguins' starting pitcher Katelyn Harden (8-9) later got Brown to pop up foul down the right field line for the final out of the game.

Mazon was tagged with the loss, falling to 10-5.  She allowed seven runs (three earned) on nine hits and two walks before being replaced by Gabby Dupree in the sixth inning.  Dupree retired all six batters she faced in order.  Ray and Anica Purdy pounded out two hits each in the nightcap.  The Seawolves also had six errors on defense in the contest.

Sonoma State will return to CCAA action on Friday for its final eight games of the regular season, beginning with a four-game series against San Francisco State on Friday and Saturday in Rohnert Park.
