ROHNERT PARK -- Jena Kaser stole the offensive show as she homered once in game one and once in game two, but the Sonoma State softball team had to settle for a doubleheader split against San Francisco State on Friday at the Seawolf Softball Field.
A complete team effort led the Seawolves to a 7-2 game one victory over the visiting Gators, but the hosts weren't able to complete the doubleheader sweep in a 5-2 game two defeat. With the split, SSU sees its record go to 19-10 in the CCAA and 33-16 overall. SF State is now 6-24 in the conference and 11-35 overall.
Game 1: Sonoma State 7, SF State 2In the first game of the day, the Seawolves got on the board in the second inning when Kaser hit her first home run of the year to right field to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead. The Seawolves would add a second run later in the second in thrilling fashion when
Ancia Purdy singled to center field and saw the ball get past the centerfielder for an error and roll to the wall. With Purdy's great speed on the bases, she was able to get around third base and plate the Seawolves' second run of the day.
The Seawolves would go ahead 3-0 in the fourth when Purdy reached on an infield single that scored
Holli Brown. The Seawolves would score three more runs in the inning to combine a 6-0 lead with another great pitching performance by
Amanda Llerena, who picked up her 19th win against 10 defeats.
Llerena went the distance, giving up two earned runs on four hits with eight strikeouts. Purdy totaled three hits in three plate appearances for Sonoma State and an RBI.
Mayleen Mazon went 2 for 4 with three RBI's.
Megan Clark took the loss (4-16) for the Gators, going six innings and allowing four earned runs on 10 hits. Jennifer Lewis went 1 for 3 with two RBI's at the plate.
Game 2: SF State 5, Sonoma State 2The second half of the doubleheader got off to a bad start that the Seawolves couldn't come back from. The Gators pushed across four runs before the Seawolves would bat. San Francisco State would score one more in the second inning to make it 5-0, before the Seawolves would get on the scoreboard when Kaser hit her second home run of the day to left field to reduce the deficit to 5-1.
The Seawolves got to within three of the Gators in the bottom of the seventh when
Carlie Daniel doubled to score
Kristine Ricossa to make it 5-2. The Seawolves weren't able to extend the rally further and settled for the doubleheader split.
Kaser and Daniel each went 2 for 2 with an RBI in the second game.
Keeley Ray extended her CCAA record-breaking consecutive games reaching base to 49, but had her hitting streak stopped at 28, which ties the CCAA record set earlier this year by Humboldt State's Darian Harris.
Mayleen Mazon took the loss (10-6) for the Seawolves.
Gabby Dupree was impressive in relief of Mazon, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing an earned run on three hits.
Aryn Guzman got the win (1-4) for Gators, going four innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits. Lucy Fernandez went 2 for 4 with an RBI.
It's Senior Day for Sonoma State on Saturday as Purdy, Ray,
Amanda Rossetta, and Brown play their final two home games for the Seawolves. First pitch in the doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 P.M.
