CARSON, Calif. -- Sonoma State collected 16 hits, but lost 10-7 in the opener of a four-game series at Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday. The Seawolves saw their CCAA record drop to 14-15 and 20-18 overall. The Toros improve to 14-15 in the conference and 20-19 overall.
The Seawolves jumped out to 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Devin Alexander singled up the middle to score
Dustyn Macaluso from second. The Toros would answer back in the bottom half of the inning with three runs. The Seawolves were down 5-1 heading to the third inning when they plated three runs to narrow the lead to one on three singles by
Cody Morris,
Eric Ehlow, and
Philip Ramos that each scored runs. Just like the in the first inning, the Toros would answer back in the bottom of the third with a run to make it 6-4.
The Seawolves would get within one-run one more time when Alexander singled to score
Alex Crosby to make it 6-5 heading to the bottom of the sixth. The Toros would prevent a shut-down inning from the Seawolves for a third time, scoring four runs to make it 10-5. The Seawolves would make the final score a little closer when Crosby hit a sacrifice fly to score a run and Alexander homered in the eighth inning to create the 10-7 final.
Sonoma State had 10 players each record hits on the afternoon, led by Alexander's 3 for 5 effort with his first home run of the season and three RBI's. Ramos also had three hits in five plate appearances with an RBI.
Jourdan Weiks and Crosby each had two hits.
Haydon Turpin took the loss (2-3) for the Seawolves going two innings and allowing five earned runs on five hits.
Winston Lavendier got the victory (6-5) for Cal State Dominguez Hills going six innings and allowing four earned runs on twelve hits. Fernando Gallegos went 5 for 5 at the plate.
Sonoma State and Cal State Dominguez Hills resume their four-game series in Carson with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 P.M.
