30th-Year Head Coach John Goelz Earns 1,000th Career Victory

ROHNERT PARK—Sonoma State University head baseball coach John Goelz reached a career milestone that only 15 other NCAA Division ll head coaches have achieved -- he collected his 1,000th career victory in a 7-0 win over San Francisco State, Goelz's alma mater, in game one of a doubleheader Saturday at Seawolf Diamond.

The Seawolves (22-22, 16-19 CCAA) dropped the second game of the twinbill, however, by a narrow score of 4-3, moving the Gators' record to 17-25 overall and 16-19 in conference play.

GAME 1: Sonoma State 7, San Francisco State 0

The story of Saturday's opener was the pitching of DeVon Golden and Mitch Coombs, who held the Gators to a mere one hit and no runs. The Gators didn't get their first hit until the top of the sixth off Golden and then Coombs came in and pitched a scoreless (and hitless) three innings.

The Seawolves offense came through and scored plenty of runs to support the great pitching. The scoring started in the second inning when Cody Morris doubled to lead off the inning and Eric Ehlow came up and singled home Morris to make it 1-0. They would stretch the lead to 3-0 when Jourdan Weiks hit his first home run of the 2015 season to score Daniel Caresio. The Seawolves extended their lead to 4-0 in the fifth when Alex Crosby doubled home Joseph Marquez. The Sonoma State would put an exclamation point on the victory when Adam Manzer would hit a two-run homer, his second of the year, to make it 7-0 after Ehlow would single home Crosby to score the fifth run.

Eight hitters got hits, led by Crosby's three hits in four plate appearances with an RBI. Ehlow went 2 for 4 with two RBI's.  Caresio, Weiks, Morris, Manzer, Marquez, and Cameron Merriwether all had one hit. Golden struck out seven in his one-hit six innings of pitching and got his third win against four losses. In Coombs' three innings of hitless baseball, he struck out two and got five Gators to ground out.

Nolan Sheridan took the loss (3-5) for San Francisco State and pitched eight innings and allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits. Mark Lindsay had the one hit for the Gators.

GAME 2:  San Francisco State 4, Sonoma State 3

The second game got off to a rough start as the Gators scored two runs in the first and one in the second to carry a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the third. The Seawolves started chipping-away at the deficit in the third when Spencer Neve led off with a single and Philip Ramos would double to move Neve to third. A Dustyn Macaluso single would plate Neve and a Weiks groundout would score Ramos to make it 3-2.

The Gators would get back one in the fifth to make it 4-2, but Sonoma State would answer that run when an Ehlow fielder's choice would score Devin Alexander to make it 4-3. Later in the inning, the Seawolves had runners on second and third with two outs, but were unable to get the tying run home and would settle for a split before the series finale Sunday.

Macaluso, Alexander, Manzer, Neve, and Ramos all had two hits in the second game. Ryan Luna started the game for the Seawolves and went the distance giving up four earned runs on seven hits and three strikeouts, but took his fourth loss against four wins.

Ryan Bohnet got the win (3-5) for San Francisco State allowing three earned runs on eleven hits and four strikeouts. Bryce Cherry went 2 for 3 with three RBI's.

The Seawolves and Gators complete the weekend series with a game at San Francisco State Sunday at 12:00 P.M.

NOTE:  Head coach John Goelz, who is in his 30th year at the helm of a program that he has shaped into a national powerhouse during his time at Sonoma State, is only the 16th NCAA Division II head coach in history to eclipse the 1,000-win milestone, and only the fifth active coach to do so.  In fact, two other Division II head coaches earned their 1,000th career coaching win this season – Ashland's John Schaly and Mount Olive's Carl Lancaster.
