Tolliver's Grand Slam Lifts Sonoma Over 'Jacks To Open NCAA's

SEASIDE, Calif. -- Anything can happen in the NCAA tournament, and on Friday afternoon in Seaside, just about everything that you've probably never seen in one game did happen.

A grand slam in the bottom of the second put Humboldt State up 4-1, but Aubrie Tolliver, who was replaced by Carlie Daniel just prior to her at bat in the top of the sixth with the bases loaded, re-entered for Daniel after Daniel fouled a pitch off of herself, only to launch a go-ahead grand slam that gave Sonoma State a 5-4 lead and the eventual victory in the opening round of the 2015 NCAA Division II Softball Championships.

The No. 5 seed Seawolves improved to 40-19 this season and will match up on Saturday at 11:00 am against No. 8 seed Montana State Billings (30-21) for the right to advance to the West 1 Regional title game on Sunday -- the Yellowjackets came from behind to upset No. 1 seed and host Cal State Monterey Bay, 7-6, on Friday in the other first round game in Seaside.  The No. 4 seed Lumberjacks (41-18) falls into the consolation bracket and will take on the Otters in an elimination game at 1:30 pm on Saturday.

Tolliver was 0 for 2 with a pop out and a strikeout on Friday against HSU starter Katie Obbema when head coach Jennifer Bridges elected to go with Daniel as a pinch hitter with two outs and the bases loaded.  On a 2-2 count and the eighth pitch from Obbema to Daniel, Daniel fouled the ball up into her face, stopping play for several minutes.  Daniel was able to walk off the field under her own power, but was unable to continue her at bat.  Therefore, Bridges was forced to put the bat back in Tolliver's hands, and she didn't disappoint.

Stepping in already with a 2-2 count, Tolliver fouled off the first pitch she saw, but didn't miss the second one, delivering a no-doubt moonshot up and over the left center field fence to clear the bases (and the dugout) for the 5-4 Seawolf lead.

Humboldt State never regained the momentum, due in part by the brilliant pitching performance by freshman Gabby Dupree, who replaced SSU starter Mayleen Mazon after Mazon gave up the grand slam to HSU's Darian Harris in the second inning.  From then on, Dupree only allowed two base runners -- one via a hit and the other via a walk -- in five and a thirds innings to remain undefeated in the pitching circle this season at 5-0.  She also had a career-best five strikeouts against the most powerful team in the CCAA.

Obbema, who beat the Seawolves twice in last week's CCAA tournament in Stockton, fell to 20-10 this season.  She allowed eight hits and all five runs were earned, walking one and striking out five.

Ancia Purdy and Keeley Ray both went 2 for 4; it was Purdy to score the game's first run on a suicide squeeze bunt by Olivia Lucchese in the top of the first inning, which proved to be the difference in the ballgame.

It was the seventh game between Sonoma State and Humboldt State, and the win by the Seawolves snapped a four-game losing streak to the 'Jacks.  The Seawolves have faced their next opponent, Montana State Billings, twice this season, winning both by one run (6-5 on Feb. 13 in Las Vegas and 8-7 on Mar. 27 in Turlock).  Sonoma will be the designated home team in Saturday's contest in Seaside.
