SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- Madelyn Densberger went for a career-best 25 kills, adding 19 digs and five blocks, leading the 22nd-ranked Sonoma State volleyball team to a five set victory over host Dominican (14-25, 25-20, 25-17, 20-25, 15-8) on Friday night at the Igloo in San Rafael. With the victory, the Seawolves improve to 3-2 while the Penguins fall to 2-3.
Complementing Densberger's effort, two other Sonoma State players recorded double-figure kills --
Caylie Seitz with 15 and
Lexi Reddick with 12. Three others also tallied double-figure digs --
Courtney Seda (16),
Calan Seitz (10) and
Kaitlyn Connolly (10). Cal. Seitz handed out a team-best 30 assists as Seda had 27.
As a team, the Seawolves hit .227 for the contest, but in the two sets SSU lost, it hit under .200 (.167 in the first set, .106 in the fourth), finishing strong in the fifth and deciding set with a .391 clip.
Amidst her career night, Densberger was just one dig away from becoming only the third student-athlete at SSU in the rally-scoring era (since 2001) to record at least 20 kills and 20 digs; the last to do it was Keala Peterson (24 kills, 21 digs) back on Oct. 21, 2009 at Humboldt State.
Sonoma State will host its 2015 home opener on Saturday when Holy Names comes to town for a non-conference tilt, beginning at 7:00 pm in The Wolves' Den.
