ROHNERT PARK -- Caylie Seitz and
Madelyn Densberger combined for 30 kills with a .565 hitting percentage while
Emily Papale was perfect in her debut, adding nine kills on 16 attacks with no errors, as the 22nd-ranked Sonoma State volleyball team sped past Holy Names in record-breaking fashion on Saturday night in three sets (25-20, 25-11, 25-8) at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves will enter CCAA play next weekend with a 4-2 record, while the Hawks fell to 1-6.
Sonoma State recorded a .536 hitting percentage as a team (59k-7e-97a), which is a new program record for best team percentage in a single game, topping a .529 effort (50k-5e-85a) the Seawolves enjoyed in a 3-0 win just last year against Cal State L.A. on Oct. 18, 2014.
While Sonoma won all three sets, Holy Names played tough in the opening set, recording a better hitting percentage than the hosts (.382-.375), but the Seawolves held off a late rally by the visitors to capture the first set, 25-20. From then on, it was all Sonoma State. The Seawolves erred just twice in 37 attacks in the final two sets, hitting .654 and .645, respectively, with a total of 39 kills while holding HNU to a clip below .100.
Seitz led all hitters with 17 kills and sported a .483 average. Densberger added 13 kills in 17 swings, erring just once for a .706 clip. Papale hit .562 while
Lexi Reddick added eight kills,
Morgan Annala with six and
Rachel Andrews with five, topped off by
Andrea Barnes' match-clinching kill, which happened to be the first kill of her career.
Kaitlyn Connolly led the defense with 16 digs,
Calan Seitz handed out 30 assists and tallied three service aces and five digs, complemented by 21 assists out of the hands of
Courtney Seda.
Sonoma State will hit the road for four straight matches, beginning its CCAA title defense at Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday at 7:00 pm.
