CARSON, Calif. -- True freshman
Bella Amyx scored her first career goal in the 52nd minute, propelling the Sonoma State women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday at Toro Stadium in Carson. The Seawolves notch their first conference win of the season, rising to 3-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the CCAA. Meanwhile, the Toros stumbled to 1-5-0 (0-2-0 CCAA).
Sonoma drew first blood in the 15th minute when
Marissa Marable headed in a cross from
Sara Van Wagoner, snapping a 435-minute scoring draught for the SSU offense to take the early 1-0 lead.
It wouldn't last long, however, as the host Toros countered with the equalizer just over two minutes later when Johana Rosas stole the ball away from a Seawolf defender deep in SSU territory and fired it into the back of the net from point-blank range, knotting the score a 1-1.
While both teams were able to get on the scoreboard early, it would be a fairly lopsided contest the rest of the way as Sonoma went on to outshoot CSUDH 25-3 in the match. In fact, the Seawolves held the Toros to just one shot in the final 50 minutes of play.
Tied at one goal apiece at the beginning of the second half, Amyx put Sonoma on top at 51:14 after Van Wagoner sent a shot off the post before Amyx took the rebound and fired it home for her first career score.
Margi Osmundson had a game-high six shots, four of which were saved by Toro keeper Alexia Flippen; Flippen totaled eight saves on Sunday. Luis didn't make any saves for SSU.
Sonoma State will wrap up its seven-game road trip on Wednesday at Humboldt State (12:30 pm kickoff) before hosting Chico State next Sunday in its 2015 home opener at 11:30 am.
