Lafranchi Nets Golden Goal In Double OT; Seawolves Win 2-1

ARCATA, Calif. -- Playing in its third overtime in the last five games, the Sonoma State women's soccer team got its first win in extra time this season on a penalty kick by Melissa Lafranchi in the 106th minute to defeat host Humboldt State on Wednesday afternoon at College Creek Field in Arcata.

The Seawolves remain unbeaten through their first three conference games of the season, improving to 2-0-1 in the CCAA and 4-1-2 overall.  The Lumberjacks fell to 5-3-0 (2-1-0 CCAA).

Cecilia Sifuentes gave Sonoma the 1-0 lead just two and a half minutes before halftime on an unassisted shot from the top of the box.  It was the 14th and final shot taken by SSU in the first half.  On the other side of the ball, Humboldt only managed one shot in the opening half.

It didn't take long for the 'Jacks to score the equalizer after halftime as Alex Jenkins scored her third goal of the season on a shot from outside the penalty box that hit off of SSU keeper Ashley Luis before trickling into the net for the 1-1 tie at 49:08.  That would be the final shot taken by Humboldt State the rest of the afternoon as the Seawolf defense held the hosts to without a shot for the final 57 minutes of action.

Meanwhile, the SSU offense continued to put pressure on the HSU defense, outshooting them 15-1 in the second half and 7-0 in overtime for a total of 36 shots to just 2 by Humboldt.  Sonoma also held the advantage in shots on goal, 18-1, and corner kicks, 8-0.

The 36th shot proved to be the difference, coming on a penalty kick off the foot of Lafranchi at 105:57 after the Seawolves were fouled deep in Lumberjack territory.

Sara Van Wagoner and Kristal Luna each attempted eight shots; Van Wagoner had five attempted on goal and Luna had three.  Margi Osmundson added six shot attempts.  Humboldt State goalkeeper Caitlin Plese made 16 saves in the 106-minute affair.

Sonoma State will host its 2015 home opener on Sunday against Chico State with kickoff scheduled for 11:30 am at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
