Women's Soccer Blasts Chico State 4-0 In 2015 Home Opener

ROHNERT PARK -- Playing a regular season home game for the first time in 2015, the Sonoma State women's soccer team didn't disappoint NomaNation, as it cruised to a 4-0 victory over archrival Chico State on Sunday at the Seawolf Soccer Field in Rohnert Park.

With the win, the Seawolves take sole possession of first place in the CCAA with 10 points at 3-0-1 (5-1-2 overall), three points ahead of second-place San Francisco State and Cal State San Bernardino.  The Wildcats fell to 5-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play.

Things got started early in the first half when Sonoma threatened deep in Chico territory.  With the ball bouncing around in the box, a Wildcat defender tried to clear the ball out of the box, but her attempt sailed directly into her own net, putting the Seawolves up 1-0 just 3:15 into the match.

It would be the only score through the first half of play even though SSU would outshoot Chico 8-2 in the first 45 minutes.  In the second half, the Seawolf shots began to find the net, beginning with a strike from Kristal Luna at 68:12 for the two-goal lead.  Seven minutes later at 75:15, McKenzie Maher netted her first goal of the season for the 3-0 lead, then at 85:14, Margi Osmundson joined the scoring party with her first score of the year to complete the 4-0 win in front of nearly 1,000 fans on a warm and muggy afternoon.

Ashley Luis recorded her CCAA-leading fifth shutout of the year; she made four saves on the day.  She continues to lead the CCAA in goals allowed (4), goals against average (0.46) and save percentage (.875).

Sonoma State will hit the road again next weekend for two games, beginning with a Friday tilt against San Francisco State at 12:30 pm.  The Seawolves will then play at Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday before returning home for five straight games.
