Women's Soccer Blanks Central Washington 2-0 To Open 2015

ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- Katie Mohr and Carolyn Greco scored goals in the second half and Ashley Luis made four saves in goal as the Sonoma State women's soccer team shutout host Central Washington on opening day of the 2015 season, 2-0, on Thursday in Ellensburg, Wash.  The Seawolves open their year at 1-0-0 as the Wildcats begin at 0-1-0.

After a scoreless first half, the Seawolves struck early in the second half.  Margi Osmundson took possession in Sonoma's offensive third and played a ball into the middle of the pitch for Katie Mohr.  Mohr fired from 25 yards out and beat Central Washington keeper Amanda White for the first goal of the game, giving Sonoma a 1-0 lead.

In the 69th minute, Sonoma found the back of the net again.  The Wildcats conceded a corner following a save by White.  Marissa Marable took the corner for the Seawolves and played it short to Osmundson who gave it back on the first touch.  Marable played a cross into the box that found the head of Carolyn Greco to give the Seawolves a 2-0 advantage.

The Wildcats would not go quietly.  Mackenzie Nolte found space in between a pair of Seawolf defenders in the 74th minute and found herself one-on-one with Luis.  Nolte's shot looked to find space off of Luis' right leg, but Luis was able to get a boot on it and preserve the 2-0 lead.  The rebound generated a chance for CWU's Keilin Farrand, who took a chance on frame, but her shot went high.

Later, in the 86th minute, Luis turned away another shot by Nolte and Allie Bohnett gathered the rebound.  Bohnett put a shot toward the net, but it whistled just high of the crossbar.  The Wildcats had a final chance come in the 90th minute on a corner kick taken by Farrand, but the Seawolves were able to discontinue the attack and preserve the shutout.

Sonoma finished the game with 18 shots, eight of which were on goal.  White made six saves for the Wildcats with five coming in the second half.  Central Washington finished with nine shots, four of which were on goal.

Sonoma State will now take a trip across the Cascade Mountains to go head-to-head with national powerhouse Western Washington on Saturday in a game slated for 7:00 pm in Bellingham, Wash.
