BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The Sonoma State women's soccer team fell on the losing end of a 2-0 decision at the hands of Western Washington on Saturday night at Harrington Field in Bellingham, Wash. The Seawolves drop to 1-1-0 this season while the Vikings remain unblemished on the year at 2-0-0.
Having survived a series of Seawolf attacks in the first 15 minutes, WWU reached the scoreboard in the 32nd minute as a corner kick by Stephanie Hamilton bounced off a Sonoma State defender for an own goal.
Catherine Miles doubled the WWU advantage in 54th minute, fighting off a defender to win a pass from Savanna Moorehouse, then curling a shot into the upper right post from 20 yards out on the left.
The Seawolves, though, battled back, nearly scoring in the 63rd minute, when
Miriam Bloom's free kick from 25 yards forced a diving save by goalkeeper Ashley Haden. Haden, who had six saves in the game, pushed the ball off the left post, and a Viking defender then cleared it off the line.
WWU had a 17-10 advantage in shot attempts.
Sonoma State continues its seven-game roadtrip to start the 2015 season on Thursday at California Baptist. Kickoff is set for 3:00 pm.
