HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Caylie Seitz led all players with 13 kills and
Kaitlyn Connolly recorded a match-high 13 digs, but the Sonoma State women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback at Hawaii Pacific to open the 2015 season Thursday at St. Andrew's Priory in Honolulu, Hawaii.
It was an extremely close first set until SSU went on a small run to take a five-point 12-7 lead early on. Later in the set with Sonoma up 17-14, Hawaii Pacific reeled off seven unanswered points to take a 21-17 advantage. The Seawolves chipped away at their deficit and eventually knotted the score at 23-23, which was the start of a back-and-forth battle between the two teams. It was finally settled at 30-28, but in favor of the host Sharks after they put a block on Seitz for the set point.
From then on, Hawaii Pacific held the momentum, taking wins of 25-14 and 25-17 in the final two sets to upset 12th-ranked Sonoma State in sweeping fashion.
The Seawolves were held to just .158 on offense while the Sharks hit .312 as a team.
Courtney Seda handed out 16 assists, complemented by 12 from
Calan Seitz.
Sonoma State returns to action Friday with two games, starting with a 4:00 pm Pacific Time matchup with Saint Martin's, followed by a 10:30 pm PT tilt with BYU-Hawaii.
