Adams Fuels Incredible Rally To Lift Sonoma Over Chico

CHICO, Calif. -- Trailing by 24 points with less than a minute to play in the first half, the Sonoma State women's basketball team rallied to beat Chico State, 61-56, in stunning fashion on Saturday night at Acker Gymnasium in Chico.

Tanner Adams scored 18 of her game-high 20 points in the second half on 6 of 8 from the three-point line to lead the Seawolves (7-11, 2-7 CCAA) to their second conference win of the year, both victories over the Wildcats, who fell to 2-8 in the CCAA and 6-9 overall.  It is Sonoma State's first season sweep of Chico State since 2001-02.

Down 36-12 late in the second quarter, Sonoma opened the contest hitting just 3 of its first 27 shots while Chico was 13 of 26, accounting for the large disadvantage early.

The tables began to turn when Jessica Mitz hit a jumper just before halftime despite the fact that the Seawolves faced a 22-point deficit entering the second half.  Little did anyone know that the two-pointer would be the beginning of an 11-0 by the Seawolves, thanks to back-to-back-to-back three-pointers by Adams to open the second half, cutting the Chico lead to 13 at 36-23.

The Wildcats pushed their advantage back to as much as 17 points at 48-31 with 12:59 left in the contest, but from then on, the Seawolves went on a sizzling 30-8 run in which SSU went 10 for 17, including 3 for 5 from long range (all from Adams) and 7 for 7 from the free throw line while holding Chico to just 3 for 14 from the field and forcing seven turnovers en route to the improbable come-from-behind victory.

In the end, the Seawolves outscored the Wildcats 47-20 in the second half, including 21-8 in the fourth quarter.  Madison Burroughs added 12 points in the win while Taylor Todd brought down nine rebounds.

Sonoma State returns home next weekend to host Cal State Monterey Bay (Friday) and Cal State East Bay (Saturday) in The Wolves' Den.  Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 pm both nights.
