ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State women's basketball team led for nearly 24 minutes, but a huge second half by visiting Cal State East Bay proved to be detrimental in Saturday's 60-56 loss at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park.
The Seawolves fell to 8-12 overall and 3-8 in the CCAA. The Pioneers (15-4, 9-2 CCAA) remained in a tie for third place with Stanislaus State just one-half game back of UC San Diego in second place.
Madison Burroughs drained a three-pointer with 5:23 to play in the third quarter to give Sonoma State its largest lead of the game (11 points) at 31-20. At that point, the Seawolves were 13 for 31 from the floor and the Pioneers were a dismal 6 for 30, including 0 for 12 from beyond the three-point line.
However, Cal State East Bay would begin its rally, outscoring SSU 40-25 over the final 15 minutes to steal the win. In that final 15 minutes, Sonoma was 10 for 20 shooting and just 3 for 5 from the free throw line. In comparison, CSU East Bay was 12 of 19 shooting (just 1 of 3 from long range) and went 15 for 19 from the charity stripe, including 10 for 12 on free throws in the final 4:35.
Burroughs led the way with 13 points for the Seawolves, followed by 11 points from
Jessica Mitz, which tied a career-high. Despite the loss, Sonoma recorded its second-best shooting performance of the season, nailing 44.2 percent of its shots (23-52) while holding East Bay to 36.0 percent (18 of 50) and just 1 of 15 from downtown.
Cal State East Bay had four players score in double-figures, led by the 16 points of Tori Breshers.
Sonoma State hits the road for two games next weekend -- at Cal State L.A. Friday and at Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday -- before returning home for its final four home games of the season, starting on Feb. 5th against Cal Poly Pomona.
