LOS ANGELES -- Four of the five Sonoma State men's basketball starters Friday combined for 55 of the team's 61 points, and it would prove to be enough in the 61-52 road victory over Cal State L.A. at the Eagles Nest in Los Angeles.
The Seawolves (12-6, 7-5 CCAA) have won seven of their last nine to pull into a tie with Humboldt State for fifth place in the CCAA standings. The last-place Golden Eagles dropped to 3-16 overall and 2-10 in conference play.
Only five of the 10 Sonoma State players to see action on Friday would score, but four of them single-handedly outscored Cal State L.A., led by the 18 points from
David Ahern.
James Davis added 15 points while
Luke Cochran and
James Slade each put in 11 points.
Nathan Molony-Benjamin accounted for the other six points with a team-high seven rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench.
Sonoma connected on 41.3 percent of its shots (19 of 46), and was successful on 47.1 percent of its shots from beyond the arc (8 of 17). The Seawolves also took care of business at the free throw line, hitting 15 of their 16 free shots, including all 14 in the second half. Cal State L.A. only turned the ball over six times all night, but the hosts shot just 36.1 percent from the hardwood (22 of 61) and 26.3 percent from three-point range (5 of 19). CSULA was just 3 of 7 from the line in the 40-minute contest.
Looking to continue its hot streak, Sonoma State will head over to Carson to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday night at 7:30 pm in the Torodome.
