PETALUMA, Calif. -- The Sonoma State men's soccer team was forced to move its home game Friday to Petaluma due to rain in the area, but it did not stop the Seawolves from cruising in a 2-1 victory over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay. Riding a six-match unbeaten streak, including three straight wins, the Seawolves improve to 6-2-4, 5-1-1 CCAA while the visiting Otters fall to 2-8-2, 0-7-2 CCAA.
The Seawolves were the first to strike in the 32nd minute when
Evan Roehrig had a breakaway opportunity and managed to get passed the Otters goalkeeper to score his second goal of the year. In the second half the Seawolves would add to their lead when
Maury Lopez had a goal in the 55th minute. It was Lopez's third goal of the season. In the 71st minute the Otter's attempted to make a comeback with a goal from Michael Maul, his second of the season. However, the Seawolves defense would prevail to preserve the victory.
The Seawolves were outshot 13 to 12. The Otters had six shots on goal while the Seawolves had four.
Mitch North led the game with five saves on the day and Cal State Monterey's Jakob Hansen had two saves on the day.
Sonoma State will return to action Sunday against San Francisco State. Originally scheduled to be played at home on campus, the wet weather forecast for the weekend has forced the game to be relocated to Sypher Field at Santa Rosa Junior College. Kickoff remains at 11:30 am.
Postgame Quotes from SSU Head Coach Marcus Ziemer:
"I thought we started very well. We could've been up by more early, but their keeper made a few very good saves."
"When we went up 2-0 on a great goal by
Maury Lopez, I thought we took our foot off the gas. Credit to Cal State Monterey Bay for putting up a fight, but I thought we lost our focus and made it more exciting then I had to be at the end."
"
Jose Avalos has been out with an injury at the start of this year, but it was great to get him back on the field in both halves. We have missed him and it will be good to get him back in the mix."
"Aside from the goal we allowed, our defense was solid.
Eric Alvarado and
Ryan Rohane are tough in the middle and
Dane Shaffar and
Devin Anderson do a great job wide. All four of them are tenacious but can also handle the ball in build up."
"We will enjoy this win tonight, but then we need to get ready for San Francisco State on Sunday. They are a good team and have shown that they are capable of beating anybody. Bottom line is, will fight for the three points."
