ARCATA, Calif. - Sonoma State defeated the Jacks of Humboldt State in five sets Friday night 18-25, 25-18, 15-25, 25-21, and 15-11 and improve 5-4 in the CCAA. You can catch the Seawolves take on Stanislaus State on Tuesday, October 18 at 7pm in the Wolves' Den.
To open the match, the Jacks jumped out ahead early in the first set due to aggressive attacks at the net and a handful of Seawolf errors. But at 10-19 Sonoma made a 6-3 run thanks to a block from
Rachel Andrews and
Emily Papale, a handful of kills and a
Courtney Seda service ace that forced a Humboldt time out at 16-22. Though Sonoma bit back with an Andrews' kill, Humboldt took the first set 18-25.
In the second set, it was the Seawolves that jumped ahead to lead 11-6. The Seawolves were showing a diverse team attack and the Jacks threw in ball handling and service errors and called a time out. Humboldt then scored five times in the next eight points to bring the score 13-12. For the rest of the set the Jacks were plagued by errors and the Seawolves cruised into victory 25-18.
The game was fairly even in the third set, untill 6-7 when Sonoma State called a timeout due to a Humboldt run. Whatever wasn't working for the Jacks got fixed because they went on a run to gain an 11-19 lead and eventually won the set 25-15.
The fourth set was probably the most evenly matched of the night. McIntire and Andrews and
Caiti Wiesner lead the offense, and the Seawolves were able to control the ball just a tad bit more than their opponent to win the set by 4.
For the final set, Sonoma lead the set 5-1 and it was enough to hold the lead through the set. Again Humboldt had multiple errors and the Seawolves were consistent on the attack. With a kill by Wiesner, Sonoma won the set and match against the Jacks.
