SANTA ROSA, Calif. -- Just 57 seconds into overtime,
Sam Layman challenged the opposing goalkeeper, Christian Holguin, on a free ball deep in San Francisco State territory, and Holguin's attempt to knock the ball away ended up ricocheting off of Layman and bounced several times the other way before resting in the back of the net, giving the Sonoma State women's soccer team a 1-0 overtime victory over SF State Sunday afternoon at Cook Sypher Field in Santa Rosa.
The 19th-ranked Seawolves improve to 9-2-1 overall and remains steady in second place in the CCAA standings with 21 points (7-1-0), three points behind conference leader UC San Diego. The Gators fell to 7-5-3 (4-4-2 CCAA).
Sonoma maintained control for the majority of the contest, holding a significant 21-5 shot advantage on the day, but it wasn't until 90:57 that one of the 26 shots by either squad would find nylon. It was the first career goal scored by Layman, and it was golden.
Sara Van Wagoner took a game-high five shots while Layman added four. SSU netminder
Allison Hadidian recorded her fourth shutout of the year in the victory.
Sonoma State will host Humboldt State at home on Wednesday at 3:00 pm before playing its final regular season road game on Friday at Chico State.
