Second Half Surge Powers Seawolves Over Cougars Sunday

SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- After trailing by a score at the intermission, Eric Alvarado converted a penalty kick just 1:49 into the second half before Evan Roehrig netted the go-ahead goal that held up to be the game-winner in Sunday's 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Cal State San Marcos at The Cage in San Marcos.

With the victory, the Seawolves (4-2-4 overall) take sole possession of first place in the CCAA with 13 points (4-1-1 in conference play), one point ahead of Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly Pomona.  The Cougars fall to 3-3-1 (2-1-1 CCAA).

Sonoma State was trailing early after giving up a goal to CSUSM's Bryan Morrison in the 18th minute. Despite outshooting them 8-4 in the first half, the Seawolves would go into halftime down 1-0. After starting the second half, CSUSM got called for a foul inside the box giving Sonoma a penalty kick. Alvarado took the kick and scored his first goal of the season in the 47th minute, evening the score at one apiece.

Just under seven minutes later, SSU would take the lead in the 54th minute when Roehrig would score his first goal of the season (and the first of his career) following a pass from Gabe D'Ambrosio. This put the Seawolves up 2-1 and would be the final score of the game.
Sonoma outshot CSUSM 15-7, including a 9-2 margin in attempts on goal.

Mitch North had one save for the Seawolves, while Justin Tesar of CSU San Marcos had seven saves.

Sonoma State will step outside of conference play on Wednesday for a week-night, non-conference matchup at Fresno Pacific, beginning at 7:30 pm.  The Seawolves will then take the weekend off before returning to action on Oct. 14 when they host Cal State Monterey Bay at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
