ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Sonoma State defeated Cal State East Bay in excellent form Saturday night in the Wolves' Den 25-22, 17-25, 25-18, and 27-25. The Seawolves set a new season high in assists (62) and kills (68) and was one-point shy of matching their season high point total with 76. They are third in the CCAA in hitting percentage, assists, and kills.
Sonoma improves to 10-9 overall and 8-4 in the CCAA, while Cal State East Bay moves to 11-10 overall and 7-6 in the CCAA.
It was a night for many a Seawolf.
Caiti Wiesner set a career high 21.5 points on the game with 20 kills as she lead the offense. She had seven kills in the first set alone, then 6 kills in the third and fourth sets. But potentially, the most impressive part of the night was when she contributed the final four points of the match with four consecutive kills to get the win.
Courntey Seda also set a career high of 56 assists.
Rachel Andrews had 18 points and 16 kills on a .520 hitting percentage, and
Calan Seitz had 16 kills with a .389 hitting percentage and 17 points.
Defensively,
Ashleigh Phelps had a career high 21 digs and
Lexi Mudd followed with a career high 17 digs and 2 service aces.
The Seawolves were up 22-18 at the end of the first set, then a kill by Cal State East Bay's Deja Thompson and a Seawolf ball handling error brought the Pioneers within two. Then kills by Wiesner and Andrews brought the set to game point. However, the Pioneers scored twice more before an Andrews kill ended the set 22-25.
In the second set, the Seawolves were down 10-16 before rallying back to 15-19, highlighted by kills from Andrews and Seitz which forced a Cal State East Bay time out. The Seawolves gained the next point to bring the set 19-16, but the Pioneers went on a 6-1 run to end the set 25-17.
The third set would feature two Pioneer time outs before either team made it to 16. The Seawolves were up by 10 after a 8-2 run at the start of the set. But it would be Sonoma's turn to call the time out as Cal State East bay went on a 12-6 run and brought the score to 21-17. The Seawolves pushed four with two kills and a block by Wiesner, and an Andrews' block sealed the set 25-18.
The fourth set was by far the closest. Sonoma State was the first team to 20, at which time the Pioneers called a timeout at 19-20. The teams tied the score at six times in the last seven points of the set. A Pioneer service error and a kill by Wiesner put the Seawolves up 24-23, then a kill by Deja Thompson of Cal State Est Bay tied it at 24 all. Wiesner and Thompson traded kills once more to tie the score at 25 all, before two Wiesner kills one the set and match for the Seawolves.
