Men's Soccer Blasts Toros To Clinch CCAA Playoff Spot

PETALUMA, Calif. -- Daniel Theobald came off the bench to score twice and Alek Cucuk buried one in the back of the net as well, lifting the Sonoma State men's soccer team to a convincing 3-0 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday at East Washington Park in Petaluma.  With the win, the Seawolves (8-3-5 overall, 7-2-2 CCAA) clinched one of six spots in next week's CCAA Tournament.  The Toros fell to 9-7-1 (6-5-0 CCAA).

Sonoma will face off with Cal State L.A. in the final regular season game on Saturday at Santa Rosa Junior College.  Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm.  A win on Saturday would give the Seawolves at least a No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in next week's CCAA Tournament, a tie would give them the No. 3 seed and hosting duties of a first-round CCAA tournament game on Tuesday against an opponent to be determined later, and a loss would put them as the No. 5 seed and be forced to play Chico State in Chico for the first round on Tuesday.

In regards to the NCAA tournament, the Seawolves are in a must-win situation from here on out as they fell out of the Top 8 in this week's official NCAA Division II West Region Poll.

Thursday's match against the Toros proved that the Seawolves are hungry to get back to the NCAA tournament as they dominated from start to finish.  Though CSUDH held an 8-7 advantage in shots through the opening 45 minutes of play, SSU had the all-important 1-0 lead at half thanks to the first of two Theobald strikes in the 41st minute when he took advantage of a Toro turnover deep in their own territory and buried a left-footed shot from 15 yards out.

It was all Sonoma in the second half as it outshot CSUDH 11-1 in the final stanza, including a 7-1 margin in shots on goal.  Cucuk collected the rebound off of Luis Mendoza's shot off the left post and fired it home in the 59th minute before Theobald came up big again just 44 seconds later to put the game out of reach.

All told, the Seawolves outshot the Toros 18-9, including 11-3 on goal.  Goalkeeper Mitch North made three stops in the victory.
