Ogilvy Scores Game-Winner In OT Thriller On Senior Day

SANTA ROSA, Calif. -- Just 2:09 into overtime, Andrew Ogilvy fought off a defender and headed a loose ball up and over the goalkeeper and into the net, sending the Sonoma State men's soccer team into a wild on-field celebration after a thrilling 3-2 win over Cal State L.A. to secure a first-round bye and the No. 2 seed in next week's CCAA Tournament in Turlock.

With the victory, the Seawolves (9-3-5 overall) finish second in the CCAA standings with an 8-2-2 mark in league play (26 points), just two points back of conference champion UC San Diego (9-2-1; 28 points).  Despite the loss, Cal State L.A. (9-5-3, 7-5-0 CCAA) grabbed the sixth and final playoff spot with 21 points in conference action.

"That was an exciting game," said SSU head men's soccer coach Marcus Ziemer.  "The crowd and atmosphere was amazing."

Both teams went into halftime scoreless, and Cal State L.A. had the narrow edge in shot attempts, 3-2.

"(Cal State L.A.) pressed us early and caught us by surprise and it took us a while to get control of the game," Ziemer said.  "The first half was back and forth, but I thought after halftime we got organized and controlled more of the game."

It was in the 51st minute when Eric Alvarado converted a penalty kick following a CSULA handball in the box, putting the Seawolves on top 1-0. Just four minutes later, CSULA answered when Ryan Arkelian received a pass from Shahin Hemat to tie the game at 1-1.  In the 76th minute, Maury Lopez scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season following a pass from Daniel Theobald to take a 2-1 lead.

The Golden Eagles quickly responded again, knotting the score at 2-2 in the 84th minute on a penalty kick after a Seawolf foul in the box, which led to overtime.  It was there, just two minutes in, that Eric Alvarado served a ball into Raad Aljabi, who then redirected the ball in Ogilvy's direction before Ogilvy knocked it home.

"I'm really proud of our guys," Ziemer added.  "In the break before overtime, somebody yelled "we've got to win this for the seniors!" And then they stepped up and did it. It's been such a great year and we just want to keep winning and keep the season going. The coaches and players are truly a "TEAM"!"

Ziemer finished by saying, "We will celebrate this one tonight and the rest up and get ready for the winner of Cal Poly Pomona-Cal State L.A. on Friday in the CCAA Semifinals."

As the No. 2 seed, Sonoma State will await the winner of No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona and No. 6 seed Cal State L.A. in the CCAA semifinals on Friday at 11:00 am in Turlock.
