#20 Seawolves Win, Clinch First Round Bye In CCAA Tourney

PETALUMA, Calif. -- The Sonoma State women's soccer team cruised past visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-0 on Thursday at East Washington Park in Petaluma, and in the process, clinched the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in next week's CCAA Tournament in Turlock.

The 20th-ranked Seawolves, who also jumped up one spot in this week's official NCAA Division II West Region Poll to No. 3, will wrap up the regular season on Saturday against Cal State L.A. at Santa Rosa Junior College.  Kickoff is set for 11:30 am.

Other news from around the conference... UC San Diego captured the conference's regular season title and the No. 1 seed next week after a 1-0 victory over Cal State San Bernardino also on Thursday.  The complete CCAA tournament field will be announced following the conclusion of play on Saturday.

On Thursday, the Seawolves and Toros went kick for kick in the first half, both attempting eight shots each, but only one would find the net.  It was off the foot of Sonoma's Holle Depina right at the goal line after a beautiful cross from the right side by Sara Van Wagoner at 35:58 to put SSU up 1-0 at half.

In the 57th minute, Taylor Enzler padded the lead when a pass from Miriam Bloom led Enzler in behind the CSUDH defense where she was able to chip a shot up and over the Toro goalkeeper and into the net for the 2-0 advantage.  In the 72nd minute, Bloom served a corner kick into the box where it fell to the feet of Alex Sifuentes in a crowd of people, and it was Sifuentes to punch it into the back of the net for the 3-0 lead and eventual three-goal victory.

Seawolf netminders Kristen Spear and Allison Hadidian teamed up to preserve the shutout; Spear started and played the first 45 minutes, making two saves before Hadidian took over in the second half and saw six shots, but none on goal.

In the end, SSU outshot CSUDH, 18-14, including 10-2 on goal.  Toro goalkeeper Elisa Martin made seven saves on the other end of the pitch.
