Seawolves Sweep Wildcats! Secure CCAA Playoff Spot

CHICO, Calif.- The Seawolves swept the Chico State Wildcats in Acker Gym 25-22, 25-20, 27-25 and with the sweep clinched a CCAA playoff spot. The Seawolves improve their record to 10-4 in the CCAA and 12-9 overall and sit second in the CCAA North Division. Chico State goes to 11-3 in the CCAA and 17-6 overall, but maintains their first place seat in the CCAA North Division.

Calan Seitz had a standout night, totaling 13 points from 12 kills and a service ace. The team had a great night defensively with 84 digs, 24 belonged to Ashleigh Phelps, 13 to Courtney Seda, and 10 to Lexi Mudd. Caiti Wiesner had 12.5 points from 10 kills and 4 blocks. Emily Papale and Rachel Andrews had 8 kills each.

The first set Sonoma gained an early lead, but it was not easy to keep. The Seawolves were down 5-6 when they went on a six point run accented by a Seitz kill that forced Chico State to call a time out at 10-6. The Seawolves again found themselves behind and the Wildcats kept them at a two-point distance and at 22-19 Sonoma called for a timeout. A few plays and a Andrews, Wiesner block and the set was tied to 22 all and it was Chico State's  turn to call the timeout. From there two Seawolf kills and a Wildcat error ended the set in Sonoma' favor.

In the second set, it was Chico State that came from behind to tie the score at 13 all. But the Seawolves pulled ahead to 14-18 and a kill by Kelsey McIntire forced a Wildcat timeout. Again the Seawolves stayed ahead, and at 22-18 a blast from Wiesner forced the second Wildcat timeout of the set. From there a kill by Seitz and block by Andrews was all that was needed to take the set.

The third and final set saw seven tied scores but only 2 lead changes. Sonoma was behind Chico State for the set all the way up until 22-18 when things got interesting. At game point Chico State, 24-29, Wiesner had a kill to get the ball back to the Seawolf side of the net and the score to 24-20. Three Wildcat errors and a Seitz kill brought the score 24 all and stayed off the threat of game point. The teams then tied at 25 all, again Seitz scored a kill and a Wildcat error secured Sonoma's sweep and their spot in the playoffs.

Next Sonoma State will play San Francisco State in the Wolves' Den on November 2 at 7pm.
