Volleyball Season Ends in Semifinals of CCAA Tournament

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Sonoma State fell to Cal State San Bernardino in the semifinal round of the CCAA tournament in four sets 25-23, 16-25, 22-25, 25-27 and end their season with a 15-12 record. The Coyotes will advance with a record of 23-4.
 
Ashleigh Phelps had a career and team season high of 28 digs, and also lead the team with three aces. Megan Bohorquez tallied 13 digs on the night and Alexandra Flores contributed seven of her own.
 
Caiti Wiesner had 18 kills on a .372 hitting percentage and lead the Seawolves with 18 points. Calan Seitz contributed 12 kills and 13.5 points. Rachel Andrews lead her team with three blocks and had 11 kills, and Kelsey McIntire had 11 kills on a .308 hitting percentage.
 
Courtney Seda was close to matching her season record with 53 assists, helping her team to their best four set hitting percentage of the season of .292 and their second highest kill total of 63.
 
In the first set Cal State San Bernardino was ahead 13-16. Sonoma went on a five point run to force a Coyote time out at 18-16. When the score came round to Seawolf set-point, the Coyotes scored twice to close the gap 24-23. However, a Papale kill claimed the set for Sonoma State.
 
San Bernardino opened the set with a five point lead, and then went on another massive 7-1 run and Sonoma State found themselves in a 11-21 hole. They tried to have a run late in the set, but couldn't salvage it and lost 16-24.
 
In the third set the teams traded rallies of two to four points. At 16 all San Bernardino got up 16-19, but a kill from McIntire and a dual block from Seda and Andrews closed the gap 18-19. The Coyotes got ahead 21-24 and Wiesner had two kills to try and rally back 22-24, however they lost the set 22-25.
 
Sonoma lead the forth set, but barely. The entire time the teams were matching each other nearly perfectly point for point. At 20 all Wiesner had two kills and at McIntire one and the score was 23-21. Wiesner threw down another blow and the Seawolves found themselves at set point 24-22. The Coyotes weren't done and scored off of a kill and a service ace and the score was tied 24-24. The score tied again at 25 all and Lauren Nicholson scored three consecutive kills to claim the set and match for San Bernardino.
 
The CCAA championship match will be Saturday at 7:00pm between the number 1 seeds in each division, Chico State and Cal State San Bernardino.
