Seawolves Outlast Broncos In Wild Overtime Affair, 70-68

SANTA ROSA, Calif. -- Fouled on a three-point attempt at the buzzer in a tie game in overtime, Mason Phillips sank two of his three free throws to lift the Sonoma State men's basketball team to a wild 70-68 victory over visiting Cal Poly Pomona on Friday night at Haehl Pavilion on the campus of Santa Rosa Junior College.  The Seawolves improve to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the CCAA while the Broncos stumbled to 3-7 (1-5 CCAA).

Sonoma led for more than 40 minutes in the contest, one that featured 48 fouls and 68 free throws between the two teams.  In fact, the Seawolves held their largest lead with 12:18 left in regulation, a 16-point advantage at 49-33 after a Jimmy Golden layup.  Both teams traded buckets for the next five minutes and after two free throws by Luke Cochran put SSU up by 14 at 56-42 with 6:56 to go in the second half, the Broncos went on a 20-6 run in the final 6:37, capped by a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Jeremy Dennis that sent the game into overtime.

It wasn't until the 2:40 mark of overtime that Cal Poly Pomona captured their first (and only) lead of the night on a Dennis free throw to put CPP up 65-64, but Cochran drained two more free throws on Sonoma's next possession to retake the lead, 66-65.  Golden then put the hosts up by three with a layup with 53 seconds left, but Pomona's William Christmas splashed a three-ball to tie the game up at 68-68 with 15 ticks left.  On the ensuing possession, and after a SSU timeout, the Seawolves swung the ball around to find Phillips in the far corner before he was fouled on his three-point attempt as time expired.

Cochran led three Seawolf players in double-figures, putting in a team-high 16 points, 10 of which came from the charity stripe.  He also added a game-high eight rebounds.  Golden chipped in with 14 points and Phillips with 12.  Sonoma shot 41 percent from the floor (16 for 39) and connected on 71.7 percent of its free throws (33 for 46).

Defensively, the Seawolves, who came into the ballgame with the second-best scoring defense in the nation, allowing just 59.8 points a game, gave up 40 of Cal Poly Pomona's 68 points in the second half alone.  The Broncos struggled at the free throw line, however, hitting just 9 of 22 attempts (40.9 percent) while making 40.3 percent of their field goals (25 of 62), including 9 of 24 from long range.

Mason Dickerson led Cal Poly Pomona with 19 points while Dennis added 18.

Sonoma State returns to the hardwood of Haehl Pavilion at Santa Rosa JC on New Year's Eve Saturday night when it plays host to Cal State East Bay.  Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm.
