ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Sonoma State women's basketball team put together a very solid defensive first half to take a two-point lead into the break, but as too often has been the case this year, a second half rally by Cal State San Marcos led to a 60-49 loss for the Seawolves on Saturday afternoon in Rohnert Park.
The loss leaves the Seawolves at 8-18, 3-14 CCAA. The Cougars improve to 6-15, 4-12 CCAA.
While the Seawolves didn't shoot the ball well in the first half, they were strong on the other end of the court, holding Cal State San Marcos to just 8-of-29 shooting and forcing six CSUSM turnovers. And while their own 26.3% first half shooting led to only 24 first half points, they'd commit just one turnover in the first 20 minutes.
The third quarter is when it all started to fall apart for Sonoma as the Cougars found their shooting stroke, equaling their first half total (22) in the third quarter alone. CSUSM would use an 8-0 run over the second part of the third quarter to turn a 36-36 tie into a 44-36 lead. While the Seawolves were within as many as seven with eight to go, that's as close as they'd get as the Cougars cruised down the stretch.
Saturday's game served as Senior Day and was the final home game for three four-year seniors:
Hannah Sourek,
Tanner Adams, and
Taylor Acosta.
Sourek finished her night with eight points, tying
Jerrica Crosby for team-high honors. Acosta had seven rebounds and Adams finished with four points.
The Cougars got 20 points from Savannah Camp and 15 more from Ashley Ontiveros. Brianna Higgins had 12 rebounds.
The Seawolves will head out on the road for their final three games of the regular season. First up is a trip to the Swamp to take on San Francisco State on Saturday night.
