Seawolves Hold Off Feisty Gators To Snap Seven-Game Skid

SAN FRANCISCO -- With the help of Hannah Sourek's team-high 13 points and eight rebounds, the Sonoma State women's basketball team held on to their lead Saturday night to beat San Francisco State 50-44 at the Swamp on their senior night.

The defeat sinks the Gators' record to 9-16 overall and 6-12 in conference while the Seawolves improve to 4-14 against CCAA opponents and 9-18 on the season.

Right out of the gate, both teams traded a couple of baskets but the Seawolf offense would be the one to pull ahead. Jessica Mitz landed a basket from 3-point land, putting the score at 11-5 by the end of the first quarter.

Although the Gators were able to tie it up at the 7-minute mark in the second, the Seawolves quickly recovered and would not relinquish their lead for the remainder of the game. The score was 30-15 at the half in favor of Sonoma.

SSU extended their lead to 18 with 5:03 to go in the third. However, with a sufficient amount of time left on the clock, SFSU began to chip away at the Seawolf lead.

With two minutes remaining in the fourth the difference was just two. But, a jumper by Madison Burroughs and three good free throws by Carly Gill closed the door on the Gators, ending their four-game winning streak while snapping the Seawolves' 7-game losing streak
.
SSU snatched 45 rebounds and compared to SFSU's 36. The Seawolves were also 31 percent (18-58) from the floor while the Gators were not far behind with a 30.8 percentage (16-52).

San Francisco's Tatsiana Dashkevich and Felicia Villarruel both possessed a game-high 14 points.

The Seawolves will travel to La Jolla Friday night to take on No. 20 UC San Diego at RIMAC Arena. They will then play their final game of the regular season the following night against Cal State San Bernardino at the Coussoulis Arena in San Bernardino. Both games are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
