Seawolves Fall Short In Triple OT Thriller At SF State

SAN FRANCISCO -- For the first time since 1989, the Sonoma State men's basketball team battled through three overtimes, but it was host San Francisco State to come out on top, as the Gators outlasted the Seawolves 80-76 on Saturday night at The Swamp in San Francisco.

The Seawolves fall to 13-11 overall and 8-10 in the CCAA, but have clinched a spot in the upcoming CCAA tournament in two weeks.  The Gators improved to 15-9 overall and 9-9 in conference play.

Starting at the 17:27 mark in the first half, the Gators held onto the lead for virtually all of regulation play—37 of the first 40 minutes the score was in favor of SFSU. That was, however, until James Davis drained a shot from 3-point territory, which tied the game at 55 all and propelled both teams into the first overtime.

With 14 seconds left, San Francisco State was up 61-59. But, a costly foul committed by SFSU's Warren Jackson brought David Ahern, the team's best free throw shooter, to the foul line and he did not miss. He tied it up at 61 and headed into double OT.

An Ahern 3-pointer put the Seawolves ahead for the first time since the first half but the Gator's William Floyd returned the favor and forced a triple overtime with a shot from behind the arc. The score was tied at 69 apiece.

And those last five minutes were all the Gators needed to seal the victory. SFSU went ahead by five and James Slade brought his team closer by draining a 3-pointer with six seconds to go. But, the Seawolves came up short by the time the final buzzer went off.

In a combined 55 minutes of play, SSU landed 37.7 percent (20-53) of their shots while San Francisco State shot just 33.3 percent (25-75), which was their third lowest of the season. The Seawolves also led with 54 rebounds compared to the Gators' 42.

The Seawolves were brought to the free throw line 45 times on 29 personal fouls committed by SFSU. However, they made just 64.4 percent (29-45). The Gators, on the other hand, capitalized on the Seawolf fouls, going nearly perfect with an 85.5 percentage, missing just three of the 24 shots taken.

Davis led the night with 21 points and Ahern put 20 on the board, as well.  Luke Cochran reached a career-high 14 rebounds.

With just two more games left in the regular season, the Seawolves will head to the Coussoulis Arena Friday night, where they will take on the Cal State San Bernardino. They will then face UC San Diego the following night at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla. Tipoff for each game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
